We are encouraging and promoting the roll out of wireless networks enabling businesses and private individuals the luxury of licence free high speed wireless network access.

These networks will provide high speed access to each connected computer for video conferencing, e-mail,  games and other Internet applications.

Australia's radio spectrum changes allow free unlicensed use by any person in the ISM frequency bands.

Frequency band

EIRP (transmit power)

915 MHz - 928 MHz

Not exceeding 1 W

2400 MHz - 2483.5 MHz

Not exceeding 4 W

5725 MHz - 5875 MHz

Not exceeding 1 W

The view from a well positioned access point, all visible buildings
can be serviced from this one location up to approx. 25km range.

Some applications of high speed wireless networks:

  • High speed Intranet
  • Internet Account Sharing - Members can "share" their existing permanent Internet connection with others on the wireless network.
  • Member run servers - Members are able to offer services, like  games servers where the wireless network really comes into its own. Because of the low latency (around 2-3 ms compared to modem 120-150 ms), game players will experience a much smoother quicker game action than ever  before.
  • Video conferencing is also more usable on a wireless network as images are  bigger and the frame rate is much faster than phone/modem lines. Members can talk to each other live as if they were in the same room, without any charges.
  • Security is another service that can be implemented as PC camera's continue to  drop in price members can fit them to various sites around the network and neighbors can keep tabs on each others property from the comfort of their computer's web browser.
  • Local Phone Calls using VOIP members can call each other using the wireless network for free

Obviously this is only the tip of the  iceberg as more and more applications will be realised over time. Such high speed reliable connectivity has never before been available at such low cost.

There is a HOWTO and some diagrams to show how the hardware is configured.
