Want your friends to be able to call you on your mobile for the cost of a local call?
Mobile phone calls are still very expensive compared to calling a local land line number. In fact many people have free local calls included in their land line or mobile phone plan.
How awesome would it be then, if you could give out you’re very own local landline number that actually forwarded to your mobile?
I discovered a simple and almost free way to do this after recently starting a new business. I didn’t want to give out my mobile number for three reasons,
1. It would mean I couldn’t ever be off work as the phone could ring at any time with customer queries.
2. It would mean I couldn’t forward calls to whoever was on duty at the time because I wouldn’t be able to differentiate between private and business calls.
3. It is much more professional to have a landline number rather than a mobile number for your business.
The magic glue that makes all this happen is call Voice Over IP or VOIP. With VOIP we can get a local number through a provider which we can then log into with a SIP Phone, mobile phone or computer in order to make and receive calls. I just use the service for incoming calls and the whole thing costs me a grand total of $5 per year!
Many of us have a data allowance with our mobile plan which in most cases goes unused or at worst under utilised, VOIP can use a little of this otherwise wasted data allowance. Remember if you go over your included allowance you may be charged by your provider.
Readers of Whirlpool, Australia’s greatest technology forum, are treated to a special deal from Mynefone. It costs $19.95 to set up but you get a $20 credit which you can use to order your local number at a cost of just $5 per year. See the plan at https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/VoIP/Plans/WhirlpoolSaver-Plan. You can sign up for it at https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/VoIP/Whirlpool-Shop/Bring-Your-Own-Device.
Once you’re set up and Mynetfone have given you all your log on details, it’s time to set up your phone to log in and start receiving calls to your new landline number.
I have an iPhone 4 and have found two free Apps that will work in the background, Fring and Nimbuzz. I have found Nimbuzz to be more reliable so far. Both these applications provide solutions for many different handsets.
There you go, now your friends and family or your customers can call your mobile at local rates!
